Notes

About Italian Mozzarella: As well as making famous cheese like Parmigiano Reggiano, Ricotta or Asiago, Italian cheese makers create hundreds of regional cheeses, fresh and aged, and many that are never found outside Italy. Mozzarella is a fresh cheese made from buffalo or cow's milk. Mozatta means tearing; the curds are torn, and then shaped in hot water. Fresh mozzarella is perfectly white.

Cooking Tips for Insalata Caprese – Salad Caprese:

  1. Use the best quality ingredients: Fresh, ripe tomatoes, high-quality mozzarella, and fragrant basil are essential for this simple dish. The flavor of the salad depends on the quality of these ingredients.
  2. Slice with care: When slicing the tomatoes and mozzarella, aim for uniform slices to ensure a balanced bite of each ingredient with every forkful.
  3. Avoid over-dressing: The beauty of Insalata Caprese lies in its simplicity. Use just a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil to enhance the flavors, and only add balsamic vinegar if the tomatoes need a bit more acidity.
  4. Serve at room temperature: For the best experience, serve the salad at room temperature, as cold tomatoes can lose their flavor.
  5. Fresh basil is key: Tear, rather than chop, the basil leaves to release their essential oils without bruising them, ensuring a fragrant burst of flavor.
  6. No need for complicated seasoning: A light sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper is all you need to season this dish.
