Ingredients

  • 4 large Golden Delicious apples
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ounces cold water
  • Juice of ½ lemon, optional
  • 0.25 teaspoon cinnamon powder, optional

Instructions

  • To prepare the apple compote, peel, core, and slice the apples. Place sliced apples, sugar, water, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a pan and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Cook, for approximately 25 minutes on moderate heat, stirring from time to time. If the texture is too thin, continue to simmer until thick.

Notes

  1. For a smooth consistency, use a hand blender to process it.
  2. Depending on the sweetness of the fruit, you may adjust the amount of sugar used.

Tips for Making Apple Compote

  1. Choose the Right Apples: Golden Delicious apples work well for this compote, but you can also use Fuji or Gala apples for a sweeter result.
  2. Adjust Sweetness: Depending on the natural sweetness of the apples, you may want to adjust the amount of sugar used. Start with a small amount and taste as you cook.
  3. Add Lemon Juice: A squeeze of lemon juice not only helps balance the sweetness but also prevents the apples from browning during cooking.
  4. Cinnamon Variations: If you prefer a more spiced flavor, feel free to add a pinch of nutmeg, clove, or a vanilla bean while cooking the apples.
  5. Blend for Smooth Texture: If you prefer a smoother apple sauce, use a hand blender or food processor to blend the compote to your desired consistency.
  6. Storage: Once cooled, store your apple compote in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. It can also be frozen for longer storage.
  7. Serving Ideas: Serve warm or chilled as a side dish, over oatmeal, pancakes, or yogurt, or as a topping for cakes and pastries.
  8. For Thicker Compote: If you prefer a thicker texture, cook the compote a bit longer to let the liquid reduce. If it’s too thick, add a little more water to reach the desired consistency.
