This is where it all starts. You want to get into cooking and you are not sure what you will need. The minimum tools that you need for the cooking lessons are:
- A good chef’s knife
- A peeler
- A paring knife
- A boning knife
- A fillet knife
- A serrated knife
- A utility knife
- A slicing knife
Other Equipment
- A steel
- A sharpening stone
- A meat fork or chef’s fork. A strong 2-teeth fork is used to hold the meat while you are slicing, and lifts the meat while cooking, thus keeping the chef’s hand away from the heat.
- A spatula: Large, wide metal spatulas used for flipping or turning large foods during cooking.
- A melon baller aka « Cuillère à pomme parisienne » or Parisian scoop. It comes in various sizes and shapes. It is made to cut balls out of fruits and veggies
For the purpose of this course, you don’t need to buy all the equipment at once. For now, just get a chef’s knife, a paring knife, a peeler and a cutting board.
I strongly recommend an eight-inch chef knife. A person with small hands might be more comfortable with a six-inch knife while a nine or 10-inch knife will work better for someone with larger hands.
